Newbattle Medical Group operates across two sites located in Mayfield and Newtongrange. Our main building in Mayfield was purpose built in 2004 and continues to serve us well. Due to an expanding local population, we opened a second smaller site in Newtongrange in 2018 and are open to new patient registrations.
We have a large population of over 18,000 patients. This is matched by our large number of GPs, offering one of the highest doctor to patient ratios in Lothian. All our doctors and nursing staff undergo annual appraisal. We are proud to be a training practice for medical students, junior doctors and future GPs.
The local area was historically a mining community and is now home to the National Mining Museum of Scotland. The main source of local employment is now light industry and many of the working population commuting to Edinburgh. The development of the Borders railway has improved the local transportation links to Edinburgh and the area continues to benefit from regeneration
We aim to provide the highest quality family health care. Our team are dedicated to offering a modern, friendly and professional service.
We are absolutely committed to patient security and your private information. To see how we implement this please click here.
The Practices & On-Site Facilities
Newbattle Medical Group recently became a two practice surgery. Our main Newbattle site has been running since 2004 and we were delighted to announce the opening of the brand new Newtongrange Site which is a satellite surgery based centrally in Newtongrange itself.

Our appointment system has changed to improve our service
In response to feedback from our patients, we have introduced a new system in the Practice. You told us that it was difficult to get an appointment with a GP and that you often had to wait too long. You can find out more about how to book appointments as well as the effect of our new system by clicking below.
“Very friendly and helpful reception staff. I was a bit nervous because it was my first time in the building. The doctor was very attentive to my needs and must say the experience was a positive one for me. Well done to everyone”Practice Patient
“Have always found staff helpful and the doctors and nurses very good. Getting an appointment has sometimes meant a lot of repeated calling, and I have not always got through, but no wonder it's stretched with all the new housing in the area.”Practice Patient
“I have found all the staff very pleasant and helpful. I realise how busy they all are and I try not to bother them unless it is absolutely necessary, hence leaving a space for someone who is more ill than me. In my experience the doctors always phone back very promptly. I was seen today by a very efficient caring doctor Fairley. Keep up the good work.!!”Practice Patient
