** Please Note: The licensed duration of use for Mirena has recently changed to 8 years.

Therefore if you are currently using Mirena for contraception you can now continue with this for up to 8 years. However, if you are using it as part of your HRT you still need to have it changed at 5 years. If you are using it for bleeding control you can keep it for 6 years, or longer if it is still helping your symptoms. This new advice only applies to Mirena. If you have a different 52mg hormonal IUD (Levosert or Benilexa) you should still have it changed at the recommended time.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs), also known as coils, are small T shaped devices.  They are fitted to sit inside the uterus (womb) and are very good at stopping you from getting pregnant. Some contain a small amount of hormone and can make your periods lighter or stop them altogether.  Others contain copper and do not contain any hormones which some patients prefer.

Fitting The Device

Drs Ansell, Aspinall, Gaskell and Morrison are the doctors who can fit these devices.

If you wish to arrange a fitting please complete the e-consult below.  In the free text section please make it clear what type of IUD you wish to have.   Please also be clear as to whether it is your first device or whether you are having a device changed.  Once received, a doctor will review the information and our administration team will contact you to arrange an appointment.

Please make sure you read the additional form to the right before attending  your appointment.  If possible bring the completed form to with you to the practice.
